Presentation Summary & Powerpoint

July 1st, 1:15pm
Philadelphia Conference Center, Rm 204AB
Martin Wolske, Travis Faust, Miriam Larson

At our ISTE presentation, we invite you to participate in a systems analysis, a popular education activity where participants role play different stakeholder groups who might be invested in creating, supporting and benefiting from an afterschool program. What barriers to community-building and what common interests do these stakeholder groups bring to the table for our evolving afterschool program and for your collaborative spaces?

Here's a link to our powerpoint presentation.

Stakeholder Groups POst Here!

Use the linked title above to add your thoughts about one of these five stakeholder groups:
  • Students
  • Parents
  • Teachers
  • Business leaders
  • Polar Bears (and Other Creatures)
  • Administrators
For your stakeholder group discuss:
  • What are your group's motivations?
  • What goals might you have for an afterschool program?
  • What do you not want?
  • What divergent goals or motivations exist in your stakeholder group.

Stay in Touch

Were you at our ISTE 2015 presentation or did you stumble across this post and get interested? We created a google document for you to post your contact information, descriptions of collaborative spaces you are involved in, resources, and questions that you want to continue to discuss.

June and the end of the school year are the perfect time to reflect on what has gone well and what we could improve in our community. Students, please take a moment to thoughtfully answer the questions in this survey.

The Library Media Center has a small collection of DVDs for teachers to check out. There are also an increasing number of free resources online that teachers and families can use to watch videos. Here's a peak at some of the library's resources and a couple places to look for online educational videos. What else do you like to watch with kids? Teachers, what other videos would you like the Kenwood Library to own?

IN THE LIBRARY . . .

Experience Civil Rights with Selma Lord Selma (89 minutes) - 4th & 5th Grade
Sheyann, an eleven-year-old Alabama schoolgirl, becomes caught up in the turmoil of the civil rights movement after being inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Based on the book by Sheyann Webb and Rachel West Nelson. Originally produced for television in 1998. (Summary from the publisher)

Laugh aloud with the animated movie The BFG/Big Friendly Giant - (88 minutes) 1-4th Grade
Roald Dahl's fanciful tale of an orphan girl spirited away by a lone friendly giant.

Check out our animated read alouds including Ella Fitzgerald: The Tale of a Vocal Virtuosa (5-10 minute animations) - K-3rd Grade
Ms. Ranney got the kids excited about Ella Fitzgerald so they will connect with this story. We have a large variety of Scholastic animated shorts including Mo Willems, African American History, fables, stories that rhyme and more!

Documentaries and discovery options abound, including Popular Mechanics for Kids: Slither & Slime (approx. 20 minute episodes) - All grades
Discover what's underground, where the garbage goes, insect worlds, and octupi in this collection. The library also has some Bill Nye, Magic School Bus, and History Channel DVDs

ON THE WEB . . .

Two PBS video resources to explore:
1. NOVA - High interest hour-long documentaries about a variety of topics, all free online with some (kid-appropriate) ads. One that I've seen and recommend is the Ice Age Death Trap

2. PBS Learning Media - They have a wide range of media resources for educators. Kratts Creatures is one animal show archived on PBS Learning Media, which comes in half-hour segments. You can also create an account for free and favorite videos or resources you find.

1st Grade Spanish Station

Buenos Dias! Goodmorning!

We have shared a school building this year with the International Preparatory Academy, a bilingual Spanish/English School. This week in the library, first graders will be practicing Spanish greetings. Next week we will share our greetings with IPA students. We'll be using a great BBC resource to practice greetings with different animals. Click the button or the frog picture to link to the BBC website.

We live in a world where we grow up in communities with many languages and ways of greeting. Let's take this opportunity to learn from our neighbors!

Often we associate civil rights leaders with the fight for racial equity during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and 1970s.

Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee
These young people faced anger and violence. Their efforts inspired other young people across the nation.

Black Power by WILLTV
The black power movement included leaders committed to alleviating poverty, challenging  violent policing, and continuing to advocate for empowering education.

Civil Rights Resources at the Library of Congress
Lesser known civil rights leaders both black and white are given voice in this exhibit.

Places to Search for Biographical Resources
  • World Book is our subscription encyclopedia and is a great starting point to search for information.
  • Biography.com includes advertisements but has thorough biographies with great picture content as well.

Modern Civil Rights Leaders: Local Leaders and Beyond
Let us not exclude the people in any age, ordinary citizens who are our neighbors, friends and family, who have fought for freedom and equality. Today, those people are still speaking out against injustice, whether it is unequal treatment of gay people, unjust police violence, or environmental justice.

Modern Civil Rights Leaders by the LA Times
This article from the LA times describes a wide array of inspiring people leading us into the 21st century. They advocate for gay rights, environmentalism, prison justice, immigrant rights and much more.

Gay Rights Activist: Harvey Milk
This article by the California Safe Schools Coalition begins, “Harvey Milk's political career was a major catalysts for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) civil rights movement.”

Social Justice Locally
  • 2015 CU Social Justice Award - Read about local leaders who were honored this year for their activism and leadership.
  • eBlack CU Publication on CUWiki - Read about the DifferenceMakers on our local wiki page.
